NB NEXT AWARDS GRANT TO WEEKEND FOOD FOR KIDS
NB Next, in partnership with the New Braunfels Area Community Foundation, awarded its first community grant this week to Weekend Food for Kids program, an outreach ministry of Gruene United Methodist Church. The $5,000 grant will go toward providing weekend food items for children with food insecurity in the local elementary, middle and high schools on a weekly basis.
Specifically, $5,000 will fill the bags of more than 100 children on the weekends for the entire school year.
The Weekend Food for Kids program became operational six years ago when Gruene United Methodist Church approached a school with the idea of sending food home with students for the weekend. Organizers work closely with Communities in Schools to identify families in needs. Volunteers pack and deliver bags of food to area schools on Thursdays. This past year, volunteers were able to serve on average 215 students per week at a cost of $1.41 per child for 33 weeks.
As part of the NB Next inaugural grant program, 12 nonprofits that support children submitted grant applications. Four finalists were chosen and asked to submit 60-second videos of their organization’s mission and work. NB Next members gathered for a grant voting event on Oct. 25 at McKenna and viewed the videos of the four finalists before casting their votes for an award recipient. The three other finalists included Canine Classmates, the Family Promise of Greater New Braunfels Child Enrichment Program and the St. John’s Episcopal Church Community Arts Program.

“We are so pleased there are so many nonprofits in our community who assist children in need and we were thrilled they applied for our grant. Picking one organization was a challenge as all the causes are worthy,” said Amanda Anding, NB Next Executive Committee Chair. “Weekend Food for Kids is well deserving and NB Next members should be proud to play a role in feeding families in our community.”
While the first grant was awarded to an organization that supports children, future grants may focus on different program goals. NB Next hopes to help a variety of nonprofit organizations.
