Board boot camp to strengthen nonprofits in 2018

Nonprofit board members and staff can start the year off strong by participating in a board boot camp on January 27 at McKenna Event Center. The day-long interactive workshop will provide tips, tools, handouts, networking opportunities, information and case studies to help strengthen local nonprofit leadership. The goal is to provide the tools needed for improved governance, financial management and overall operational success.

McKenna Foundation partnered with New Braunfels Area Community Foundation to host the workshop in the community.

“The longer we are in the nonprofit business the more we believe how essential a strong, diverse and committed board can be to an organization,” said Alice Jewell, CEO/Executive Director of McKenna Foundation. “Even with the best of intentions, a lack of knowledge about nonprofit governance and the true responsibilities of a nonprofit board can end up being a real detriment. “

The right kind of knowledge is power, Jewell explained.

“We want to invest in people through the board boot camp so they can, in turn, grow that investment through participation in local nonprofit boards,” she said. “Every nonprofit has a different culture, but the governance framework and financial oversight of all should be similar. We want to empower individuals and nonprofit boards to help elevate nonprofit operations to the highest level possible. Our community depends on it.”

Jennifer Moriarty, Moriarty Consulting Group, will serve as facilitator and oversee the day’s agenda, which will include:

  • Networking Exercise
  • 10 Roles and Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards
  • Financial Fitness Basic Training by Guest Speaker Jeannie Frazier, CFO, Partner, Aventine Hill CFOs
  • Panel Discussion on Achievements and Challenges including the following panelists:Chris Douglas, CEO, Communities in Schools of South Central TexasMario Luna, Board Chair, McKenna Foundation
  • Hugo Hernandez, President/CEO, Any Baby Can

“Nonprofits provide social services that ensure a healthier community,” said Brit W. King, President/CEO of New Braunfels Area Community Foundation. “These services are invaluable to New Braunfels, and nonprofits cannot be as impactful without diverse, passionate, and well-trained boards. This training will provide valuable insight on what the role of the board is and tools to make nonprofit boards more effective.”
