CRRC of Canyon Lake Endowment Fund

Who is CRRC of Canyon Lake, Inc?

The Community Resource and Recreation Center was incorporated as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization on Jan. 23, 2003. CRRC was created when the Canyon Lake Action Center and the Canyon Lake Community Recreation Center joined together to accomplish the various needs of the Canyon Lake community. The CRRC mission statement, “to serve the residents of Canyon Lake by providing vital social service resources as well as life-enriching recreation and educational opportunities,” fulfilled both organizations’ desire to serve.

CRRC provides a food pantry, emergency financial assistance, and Thrift Store vouchers. CRRC provides a durable medical equipment lend program and partners with the Comal County Senior Center for meals on wheels. An active senior group meets weekly at the CRRC, and meeting space is available for many other organizations and events including health seminars, club meetings, voting, safe driving classes, and private parties. The Recreation Center has active Silver Sneaker I & II programs, Silver & Fit, yoga classes, adult and girls’ volleyball, adult and kids’ basketball leagues, pickleball, Zumba, Karate, Dance and other classes.

Over the years, CRRC has continued to grow to meet the needs in our community. With New Braunfels being the second-fastest growing city in Texas, Canyon Lake has grown exponentially as well. Our client base for services has seen more than a 200 percent growth in the last 5 years alone and so has their needs.  Canyon Lake has no viable form of health care facilities, no MHMR or Family Crisis programs, nor is our space for services at CRRC conducive to continue to meet current and future needs.

In 2014, CRRC applied for and received a matching grant from the McKenna Foundation to purchase property next to our current pantry and thrift store, as well as begin building a new facility. The stipulations on the grant were that we had until Dec 31, 2015 to raise the match.  Not only did we raise the funds, we surpassed it by almost $40,000.

To date, CRRC has raised more than $600,000 in donations in addition to the McKenna Grant, allowing us to purchase the property next door to our current office and Thrift Stores as per the scope of our grant request. The new facility is currently under construction with a projected move-in date of Fall 2019.

What this will allow CRRC to do for the residents of Canyon Lake is to continue to provide food pantry services to seniors, families, and individuals as well as our Durable Medical Goods loan program, Meals-on-Wheels program, and financial assistance programs. New services can be provided to include a partnership with Canyon Lake Fire EMS, Methodist Healthcare Ministries, and others to provide a medical exam room in order to provide basic medical services to uninsured and underinsured residents. We will also house a counseling center through partnerships with MHMR, PTSD, family, substance, and abuse counseling services for those in our area. The new facility will also have several meeting rooms that can be combined for larger classes or events with specialization in health, nutrition, and financing as well as opportunities for seminars, private classes, functions, or events by making the space available to businesses and public use.

Future expansion and growth within the new facility should allow us to expand the services offered to the Canyon Lake community not only through our own programs, but with collaborations from other organizations as well.
